Roma in parliament

The only Roma MPs in the Hungarian Parliament are there as a result of a financial deal between the Fidesz Party, during the last government, who agreed to put some Roma, such as Florian Farkas, on their "lists" in exchange for cash. This was an attempt to impress the European Union prior to accession. During the "negotiations" concerning this pre-election deal, officials from the then Prime Minister's office, where some of the discussions took place, state that Roma issues were not discussed, the topic was only the "price" to be paid for these Roma to go on the Fidesz list.

After the elections, some human rights organizations were reporting, in encouraging terms, the fact that Roma has been "elected" to the Hungarian Parliament. In reality no one effectively voted for these Roma MPs since they were simply on the party list. More to the point they have no constituency and they act as if they have no constituency, let alone Roma constituency. They have yet to raise essential issues of genuine concern to the Roma. Unfortunately, the mainstream political class show no example of proactive concern for constituents, that is the people within a part of a country which makes up the geographic boundaries of their constituency. When the mainstream politicians overtly demonstrate a total lack of beneficial leadership qualities, then it is to be expected that Roma politicians might take their money and behave in the same way. Basically they are just keeping out of trouble and not rocking the boat. Given that they were paid to go on the party lists and now enjoy some relative prosperity, it is not at all surprising that nothing is heard of them as they simply enjoy, what is for them, the good life in splendid isolation from their people.
