A forum on the priorities for Romani emancipation?

Return to the Development list

In the light of findings in the field (see previous article in this section) SEEL had proposed a system whereby grass roots Roma could have a more effective control over the advocacy which is carried out in their name and in particular on issues of economic development. The proposal was for a Romani forum where specialists and so-called experts can contribute but the mediation of what is posted is controlled by a committee of Roma. We trialed this but as expected the process turned out to be extremely slow.

We are now reconsidering how to improve this process.

At the moment the proposal which appears most useful is for us to have SEEL post briefs which are strictly analytical and setting out options but without advocating any particular direction for action. On the other hand, since we are emphasising the economic aspects of all issues, the preferable options will sometimes be self-evident.

SEEL will initiate an extension service through which guides to briefs are made available and people can comment as they think fit. SEEL is likely to set up an email list solely on economic issues or the Cigány Economy to which anyone will be able to participate.
